we go through one or two house walls and what do we see? we have almost no reception in this case - 80 dbm. i extend the distance, i now go downstairs and repeat the measurement again and here i have no more reception. this is a terrible phenomenon. what can you do about it? you could hang up a lot of repeaters.
i have run 4 repeaters in my household to cover a house of this size here. this is absolutely untenable. the repeaters cost a lot of money, need a lot of electricity and it is just annoying. it would be simpler to offer the wireless router simply a better antenna. unfortunately, this does not work with new routers. we have no antenna connections here! so i add on these antenna for myself.
important, whoever does this must be aware of the following. the moment you open the router and make structural changes to it, you lose definitely your guarantee. but we just look at my table and i just demonstrate it here on this model. first of all, let's look at our materials. in my case, i use here 2 antennas, i prefer in this case those dual-band antennas
covering the 2.4 and the 5 ghz network. advantage of this method is that i can ensure that i always have the right antenna. there are routers that have only a 2.4 ghz network, there are routers with a 5 ghz network and there are routers that require dual-band antennas. with these antennas we are always properly equipped. next we need a screwdriver to open the device,
in my case it is a t8 torx screwdriver. also very important we still need a pvc tool or a non-conductive tool for the work on the board in order not to create a short circuit. optionally, i bought two antenna extension cables. so i can increase the range of the antennas once again because i can now position the antenna away from the router. and last but not least, the most important component,
here are the two wifi antenna adapter cables for internal use, eg type rp-sma / mini hf bnc in this case in a length of approx. 15 to 20 cm. this material can be obtained on the internet, of course. there are also traders who specialize in providing various sets for the router conversion. what you buy i leave to you. let us now turn to the pure conversion of the device. it is important to mention here,
if you open the device loses its warranty. i recommend here perhaps not the expensive mainrouter to upgrade. possibly you can purchase a used device or buy an access point or a repeater. these must, however, internally have an antenna connection on the board. have you purchased such a device you can of course connect it network cable witha the router connect and over there your wifi net spend.
this cheaper access point or router can of course be converted in this way, but here the advantage you do not risk your expensive terminal but working on a cheap accessory. however, if the work is successful you can also use it reliably. let us now turn to our terminal. important before you start this step,
disconnects your terminal from the power supply, disconnects all connections that are attached to this device, network cable and so on and it would also make sense to backup the system if this router offers. if you have now done everything, your router is now in front of you and we first open the case. we remove the lower screws. please look where these sit. sometimes they sit under the feet.
you have to take this out. in this case, it isn't so. i can simply remove the screws. the plastic housing consists of two parts, we have screwed it, we have to unlock two stegases at the front and can now remove the cover. please take care that nothing falls from the housing, also not the circuit board.
now we see our open router in front of us. inside you see the board. before touching or working on it, please go to a large metallic object, grab it so you can ground yur self, and not be able to transfer any micro voltages to the board and thereby destroy it. we now look at the open device in peace. we see here in this case
a board on which we, firmly installed, an antenna find. it is down here and we have a connected antenna with two cables. one for 2.4 ghz and one for 5 ghz. as i said, some routers use dual-band antennas, but i've already explained to you earlier. in our case, we go straight to the two network antenna connectors.
these are located below. these are obtained with a plastic tool. please do not use metallic tools such as screwdrivers or the like. this can permanently damage the circuit board. we go under the plugs with the plastic tool and carefully lift it upwards. if we have both plugs separately we can now remove the antenna board. please do this carefully and possibly also raise the existing base board. a small additional tip,
please do not pull the cable to loosen the plugs, which could lead to lasting damage to the circuit board and to the antenna. after we have removed the board, you see the bare router housing in front of you. as you proceed here, i leave you, i show you my way. now we have namely the antenna cables somehow into the rout introduce. there are people who drill holes in the housing, there are people who use existing gaps.
i belong to the latter. i walk down through the ventilation grilles. i extend two of these ventilation grilles easily with a plastic tool and plug the antenna cables through. as you do then, i leave you. alternatively, you can attach the antennas directly to the router by drilling them. after we have inserted the cables comes the most difficult part. please put the board back carefully into the housing. do not squeeze here now the newly laid antenna cable,
put it clean to the antenna connections and now we come to attach these connections. this is somewhat tricky. please carefully place these connections on the pin, which must be exactly straight and now press downwards. if you can not do this with the hands, use the plastic tool here and press it lightly. if you put the connector jammed, you destroyed the plug. so please give yourself a lot of trouble here.
now please press once again on the plug and we hear a small "crack" sound and so we have the antenna sensibly connected to the board. we repeat this step with the second antenna and the worst has been surmounted. now the question arises: "what do we do with the old, no longer needed antenna?" i recommend you to keep these very well. in order not to lose it you could alternatively also be accommodated in the housing.
if you are doing this, please pay attention to isolating all metallic objects on the antenna, especially the end cables and plugs, and reinsert this antenna into your housing and install the cables so that they do not come into contact with the circuit board and do not interfere with the assembly of the router. now we take a look into our work, examine that really everything is cleanly installed and come to the close of the routers.
we close the router simply backwards. to proceed as we have also disassembled it. when closing the router, please make sure that you do not pinch, crush or damage any cables, and turn your 4 screws back on. after the router housing is now closed, from our ventilation grids protrude. it would be useful to attach these connectors in some way, so that they can not be torn out.
we can do this with cable ties, but there are also adapters for attaching the antenna. here are some manufacturers that offer these adapters. however, it is no problem for an experienced craftsman to build something here. in any case, it is very important to connect the antenna connections reasonably with the router, so that nothing can be pulled out. alternatively, you can also work with a glue gun. now we see the finished configured router in front of us, but now the antennas are still missing. alternatively,
alternatively, you can extend the antennas with some additional cable, which means you take additional antenna cable and can thereby significantly increase the range. i screw in this case the antennas directly to our newly created connections and we can now try the router. so i go to the position where i want to put it, build it up and put the plug into the socket and we wait until the router has built up the wifi network. here again quickly the test results
that i get now with the newly built system. at a distance of approximately 7 meters, this shown test result with 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. we see there has been a lot of work here. then we can simply extend the test. we go about 15 meters away from the router, we have 3 walls between the router and our terminal and have this result which can also be seen.
so now we extend the test simply once again. we leave the building and repeat the test here in the outdoor area. we are about 23 to 25 meters away from the router. before i had here definitely no reception and that is the measured result in 2.4 ghz network and here again the result in the 5 ghz network. so and so i would then claim that in my case, the transmission power has drastically increased. so here with me were at least 50 to 75 percent
